Tiruvaarur
Thaer Thiruvizha (car festival), April 30, 2004
The annual
car festival of the Tiruvarur Sri Thyagarajaswamy temple took place on
April 30, 2004.
The temple car (thaer
in Tamil)also known as the Aazhi Thaer is a wooden structure with wonderful
carvings depicting stories from the puranas. Considered the biggest
temple car in Asia, it weighs around 300 tonnes and consists of four sections
with an octagonal platform. It runs on giant iron wheels & is
operated with a hydraulic brake system, provided by the Bharat Heavy Electricals
Ltd. The devotees pulled the car wtih great religious fervour.
Bulldozers provided by the Agriculture Engineering Department were used
to push the car from behind.
Tiruvarur is among the
Sapthavidanga Sthalams. The presiding deity is Tyagesa. Once the
capital of the Chola rulers, it was ruled by great kings such as Manuneedi
Cholan, Abayakula Sekara Cholan & Musukunda Cholan. According
to legend Musukunda Cholan is believed to have brought the Sri Thyagarajaswamy
idol from the Deva Logam.
