'The Kashmir Paisley Shawl and Beyond', Jamawar Treasures - an IAAC Digital Exclusive

The Wonder Stories, a digital series by Indo American Arts Council (IAAC), to trace the threads connecting ancient Indian arts and crafts to the modern.
 
Kashmir’s Jamawar Shawl, traditionally hand woven with Pashmina, is coveted for its soft wool, delicate weave, and intricate patterns. Pashmina has been worn since antiquity and remains the enduring symbol of Kashmiri craft. 
 
Ancient India’s greatest poet, Kalidasa (4th -5th CE) mentioned Kashmiri Shawls in his writing, and The Book of Han, written in 111 CE refers to the presence of Pashmina in China. In the 18th and 19th Century, those shawls became a must have item for the European and Ottoman nobility. French Emperor Napoleon gifted Pashmina Shawls to both his wives, including Empress Josephine, who favored them above other luxury items.
 
Pashmina continues to be a source of inspiration for contemporary fashion designers, many of whom have used this subtle fabric to adorn models walking the ramp in Paris or Milan and accessorize middle class and high society around the world. 
 
Three world class authorities on Pashmina in the inaugural program: Author Frank Ames, Revivalist Adi Kitroo and Dr. Nirmal Mattoo to talk about Jamawar, the Paisley Pashmina Shawl from Kashmir - its evolution over the centuries and the style innovations that will define its future.
