Tamil Heritage Trust's Monthly Heritage Talk for February 2021 is titled "Digging Deep: Exploring Prehistory in Tamil Nadu"
Humans have inhabited the land we now call Tamilnadu for well over a
million years. Archaeologists who study prehistory continue to reveal
fascinating facts about our earliest ancestors - the tools they used,
the ways of their life and how they adapted to changes in the
environment.
Drawing on their own pioneering research at Attirampakkam and other
sites in Tamil Nadu, Dr Shanti Pappu and Dr Kumar Akhilesh will trace
the prehistory of Tamil Nadu, that dates back to more than a million
years ago. They will share insights on how they approach prehistoric
archaeology and how they study stone tools to explore the minds of
ancient tool-makers. They also will explore questions related to
prehistoric cultures, population migrations and changing technologies in
this region.
At 5.30 pm IST on Saturday, February 6, 2021. Talk in English.
Dr Shanti Pappu is the founder/secretary and Dr Kumar Akhilesh is the
Director of the Sharma Centre for Heritage Education (SCHE, Est.1999)
They direct long-term interdisciplinary projects, investigating
Prehistory and Palaeoenvironments along the southeast coast of India,
including excavations at Attirampakkam and Sendrayanpalayam, with
surveys in northern and southern Tamil Nadu. They have published 2
books and over 30 research papers in peer-reviewed journals, including
Science and Nature.
Dr Pappu is a former Professor of Prehistory from the Deccan College,
Pune and a former Homi Bhabha Fellow and a Charles Wallace fellow and
has obtained several awards including Prof. H.D. Sankalia gold medal,
Deccan College, and Young Scientist award, Earthwatch Institute, USA.
Dr Akhilesh obtained his Ph.D from the Deccan College, Pune. He was
awarded the Homi Bhabha Fellowship for a project that involved microwear
studies in CENIEH, Spain. In collaboration with the Regional Remote
Sensing Centre-South, NRSA, he was involved in GIS and applications of
satellite remote sensing for research and heritage management of
prehistoric sites in Tamil Nadu.
