Talk, 'Watercraft in Early Tamil Literature and Inscriptions', by Dr V Selvakumar explores references to different types of watercraft in Tamil literature and inscriptions.
at 5.30 pm IST on Saturday, June 5, 2021 (talk in English)
Tamil literature has references to several types of watercraft. Kalam,
vanji, ambi, navai are some of the watercraft mentioned in early Tamil
texts. From Sangam literature we learn of the range of contexts in which
these watercraft were used - long-distance navigation, inland
navigation, coastal transport and more. Medieval inscriptions too refer
to the use of watercraft for applications like maintaining irrigation
tanks and long-distance trade.
