Tamil Heritage Trust “Krishnadeva Raya: A King for all Seasons”.
Talk by Dr Srinivas Reddy upon various aspects of the life and times of
the great king highlighting the king's embodiment of the ideal of a
kavi-raja: a
poet-king, or enlightened monarch. Drawing on Portuguese sources as well
as the king's own mahakavyam Amuktamalyada.

He was a statesman, a warrior, a poet, a musician, and a
philosopher. He was Kannada Rajya Rama Ramana ("Lord of the Kannada
empire"), Andhra Bhoja ("King Bhoja of Andhra") and Mooru Rayara Ganda
("King of Three Kings").
During his reign from 1509 to 1529, Krishnadeva Raya expanded the
Vijayanagara empire and presided over a period when arts and literature
flourished. Indeed, his glorious reign at a critical moment in world
history warrants his reputation as India's first global leader.
Dr Srinivas Reddy is a scholar, translator and musician. He is
Guest Professor of South and Southeast Asian Studies at IIT Gandhinagar
in Gujarat, India and Visiting Assistant Professor of Religious Studies
and Contemplative Studies at Brown University, USA.
He graduated from UC Berkeley with a PhD in South and Southeast Asian
Studies. He studied Sanskrit, Tamil and Telugu literary traditions and
completed his thesis on the Vijayanagara emperor Krishnadevaraya and his
grand Telugu epic Amuktamalyada, a work that he has translated and
published in English. His latest book is Raya: Krishnadevaraya of
Vijayanagara (2020).
Dr Reddy is also a concert sitarist and spends his time performing, teaching and conducting research around the world.
