Tamil Heritage Trust at 5.30 pm IST on Saturday, August 6, 2022. Talk in English.
In his Talk for THT, "Revisiting the Martand Sun Temple: Lalitaditya and
the Kashmir Style of Temple Architecture", Prof Ratan Parimoo will
offer a comprehensive view of the temple, give us a perspective of how
the temple has been viewed by successive generations of art historians
and conclude with interpretations based on his own extensive
scholarship.
The spectacular
Martand Sun Temple, located near Anantnag town, stands as a magnificent
example of the architecture of Kashmir region from the first half of
eighth century, inspite of having undergone much destruction.
Constructed as a prestigious monument by the victorious king Lalitaditya
of the Karakota Dynasty, the Martand temple became the template of the
medieval Kashmir style of temple architecture. Interestingly, right since its discovery in the late 19th century by
British colonial officials, the grandeur of Martand temple has been
explained as a consequence of the influences derived from Graeco Roman
architecture. However, Prof Ratan Parimoo, the eminent artist and art
historian, has demonstrated how the early medieval phase of Hindu temple
architecture of Kashmir is as much intrinsically related to the Shilpa
Shastra tradition-based architectural developments across the different
regions of India, as much as the Sanskrit intellectual scholarship of
Kashmir is inherently integrated with rest of the country.
Prof Ratan Parimoo is an eminent artist and a pioneering art
historian. He received a Commonwealth Scholarship to study Art History
at the Courtauld Institute of the University of London. He earned his
PhD from The Maharaja Sayajirao University of Baroda. He served that
institution as the Head of the Department of Art History, helping to
shape the teaching of Art History as an independent discipline in India.
He was subsequently the Dean of the Faculty of Fine Arts and retired
from teaching in 1996. He was invited to lead the Lalbhai Dalpatbhai
Museum in Ahmedabad as its Director.
Prof Parimoo is a founder-member of the Baroda Group of artists.
Exhibitions of his art have been held regularly since 1955. A
recipient of several awards and honours, he is internationally known
through his critical research, the several books he has authored and
edited and the over hundred and thirty papers he has published. He has
served on the Boards of several acadmic institutions and professional
bodies.
Prof Parimoo introduced the European methodological framework alongside
Indian aesthetic theories of Rasa and Alamkara for the analysis and
interpretation of Indian art. From Indian textual sources he has drawn
on Buddhist, Puranic and regional texts for the interpretation of
sculpture and painting..
