Kalasagar, commemorated the 21st death anniversary of
its founder, Kathakali maestro, the late Kalamandalam
Krishnankutty Poduval, as GURUSMARANADINAM
(Homage to Gurus) on Monday, October 14,
2013 at NARADAGANA SABHA, TTK
ROAD, CHENNAI, by honouring eminent
performing artists and gurus in Chennai.
Shri Krishnankutty Poduval, was a legendary
player of the chenda and an informed critic
of Kathakali. He studied the visual grammar
and rhythmic structure of Kathakali under
Guru Pattikkamthodi Ravunni Menon and went
on to reinterpret the chenda‘s role in
Kathakali. Poduval was reputed for tracing
subtle emotions in the characters with his
chenda, providing mood music to romantic
scenes and prompting the actors to do their
best on stage. His holistic understanding of
Kathakali helped him integrate music with
each visual. This remains an unparalleled
achievement. Poduval scripted and directed
many Kathakali plays like Bhishmaprathignya,
Amba, King Lear, and Snapakacharitham, to
name a few. He left behind a treasure trove
of knowledge on Kerala’s performing arts in
general and on Kathakali in particular -
both at the theoretical and practical
level.
Kalasagar has been annually celebrating its
founder’s birthday on May 28 with events
which have become a part of the cultural
calendar of Kerala with the active support
and participation of well-wishers. In
May 2008, Kerala Kalamandalam published
MELAPERUKKAM, a book containing Poduval’s
articles and in May 2009, Kerala
Kalamandalam published SOURYAGUNAM,
Poduval’s biography written by Prof. K P
Babudas.
Kalasagar Award in memory of Kalamandalam
Krishnankutty Poduval is being presented to
eminent artists in the field of Kathakali,
Ottenthullal, Chakyarkuthu, Thayambaka,
Panchavadyam, Bharathanatyam, Mohiniyattom,
Kuchipudi. The awardees are selected through
nominations from art lovers.
The Guru’s honoured at the Chennai
event on October 14, were Dr. Padma
Subramaniam and Prof. A Janardhanan of
Kalakshetra, Chennai.
The evening’s programme started with dance by the students of
Triveni School of Dance, Chennai
followed by presentation of ASHTAPADIYATTAM
a dance drama based on Jaydeva’s
Geetha Govindam conceptualized and
choreographed by Kalamandalam Krishnankutty
Poduval and produced and directed by Rajan
Poduval with the support of Kalamandalam
Vijayakrishnan and Shri Vinayan and
Kalamandalam Maya of Triveni School of
Classical Dance, Chennai.

An Exhibition of Photographs by Suresh
Punjabi curated by Christopher Pinney titled
“Studio Suhag” @ Art Heritage
Gallery, opening with a book launch by
Chritopher Pinney “Artisan Camera: Studio
photography from Central India”.
Duration: 25th September – 9th October
(except Sundays and Bank Holidays)
Time: Daily 11am-7pm
(Opening: 25th September, 2013 at 5.30 pm)
Studio Suhag provides a glimpse
into small-town India – Nagda, an
industrial town in Madhya Pradesh in the
late 1970s. The exhibition presented the
highlights of some two thousand or so
images salvaged after the monsoon of 2010
by the Visual Anthropologist Christopher
Pinney in collaboration with Suresh
Punjabi, the Studio owner.
Studio Suhag has always been a space for
fantasy, a chamber of dreams where clients
(sometimes using propos available in the
studio) would incarnate themselves as
glamorous brides-to-be (dangling plastic
grapes), impressively attired
professionals, or filmi heroes and
villains. It was also the venue for
villagers and townspeople to celebrate
festivals, friendship and family. At
Eid customers brought in their goats to be
photographed, so filled were they with
love and pride. At Rakshabandan brothers
and sisters arrived at the studio so that
their enduring bonds might be rendered
photographically permanent. At the end of
the month of Shravan, when many men grew
their beards as an outward sign of their
fast, they arrived to be photographed
en-route to the barber. All of this took
place in a claustrophobic space captured
in medium format with Suresh’s battered
Yashica.
Studio Suhag! presents a city in effigy,
undoubtedly the most comprehensive and
significant archive relating to the
everyday life of Nagda Jn, Madhya Pradesh
(and possibly any similar-sized town), in
the late twentieth century. It makes
visible a vernacular modernism, a lost way
of small-town life with all its improvised
inventions through images that also
dramatize the limits and potential of
photography.
Suresh Punjabi continues to run
Studio Suhag in Nagda Jn, Madhya Pradesh.
It is now completely digital.
Christopher Pinney is Professor of
Anthropology and Visual Culture at
University College, London. His book
Camera Indica: The Social Life of Indian
Photographs (1997) drew heavily upon
conversations with Suresh Punjabi whom he
has known since 1982. His research
interests cover the art and visual culture
of South Asia, with a particular focus on
the history of photography and
chromolithography in India. He has also
worked on industrial labor and Dalit
goddess possession.
An Exhibition of Photographs by Cop Shiva
titled “My Life is my Message”
Duration: 25th September – 9th October
(except Sundays and Bank Holidays)
Time: Daily 11am-7pm
(Opening: 25th September, 2013 at 5.30 pm)
In this exhibition Shiva
presents 2 bodies of work – communicating
the interplay of shifting identities as
his subjects live out two lives – one
real, and the other fictional. This sense
of ‘duality’ reflects a split in the
artist himself, as he moves between his
vocation as a policeman by day, and his
passion for photography in his leisure
time. This journey through life leads ‘Cop
Shiva’ (the photographer’s professional
title) to two middleclass individuals -
Basavaraju and Vidyasagar - who inhabit
different worlds as part of their ‘normal’
daily routine, capturing the process of
their transformations.
B. S. Shivaraju aka Cop Shiva
is a policeman in real life and learnt
photography so as to document events.
Hailing from a village near Bangalore, he
focuses on shooting people and
‘portraiture’ as a genre. He is fascinated
with the idea of masquerade and the roles
people play in public and private. Shiva
continues to capture the diversity of
humans who live on the edge, those who
represent, most acutely, the spirit of our
times.

Of the many ways in which we learn new ideas
and expand our creative and intellectual
horizons, the one that appeals the most to
all of us irrespective of our age is
learning through stories. Indeed, it is what
we learn through stories that stay with us
for years, remaining vivid in our memories
because of the images they invoke in our
minds.
Free previews of different story telling
styles that will appeal to listeners of all
ages.
Saamarthiya
