Temple walk and talk
Talk on Saturday May 24, 2014 at 11am at
Aangana Bimba The Art Ashram
Walk on Sunday May 25, 2014 through Kote
Venkateswara temple on KR road with Master sculptor Ganesh Bhatt
Sculpture tell us much more about the spaces we
walk into than we can fathom. In the case of
temples they tell us more about the period and
connect us with the worship aspects unique to each
temple. They also connect us to ageless wisdom
when we view them in relation to their alignment
to the temple architecture and astronomical
phenomena.
Shri Ganesh Bhat practices and generously
propogates ageless Shilpa Kala stone sculpting
methods and Agama Shastra rules.
He tutored under Professor S K Ramachandra Rao - a
scholar, painter, sculptor, musicologist,
author of many books and much more.

India Foundation for the Arts showcased two
projects RE-IMAGINING STORYTELLING TRADITIONS:
Comic Art and Animation.
At: The Oak Room, The Park, No. 14/7, M G Road,
Bangalore, 7pm
.indiaifa.org
Vidyun Sabhaney, a graphic storyteller from
Delhi, was supported by IFA to study the visual
storytelling techniques of three image-based folk
performance traditions-Patuachitra from Bengal,
Kaavad from Rajasthan and Togalu Gombeyatta from
Karnataka-towards enriching her own practice. Her
research culminated in a three-day workshop in New
Delhi, titled Image and Word, on traditional and
contemporary visual storytelling practices in
India. Vidyun shared her experience of travelling
to remote villages and meeting master artists who
remain passionate about their practice despite the
harsh realities of their environment. She also
spoke about the impact this study has had on her
own practice.

Bhaskar received an IFA grant to digitally
replicate the 17th century Ramayana murals of the
Chengam Venugopala Parthasarthy temple in Tamil
Nadu. Temple and court spaces have vast stretches
of narrative mural paintings, engaged in a losing
battle with time and the administration. "If they
can't be saved there, save them elsewhere, through
documentation, digital restoration and replication
on other media including cloth (kalamkari), film
(animation), etc," believes Bhaskar, who has been
documenting and archiving these murals for eight
years. He shared his explorations into these
alternative forms of mural conservation,
reconstruction and restoration.

Swami Vivekananda 150 Women's Initiative
Kalakendra in collaboration with the Swami
Vivekananda 150 Women's Initiative presents the free
live webcast of the 2014 Women's Convention,
on the occasion of Swami Vivekananda's 151st Birth
Anniversary, at Narada Gana Sabha, Chennai at
4.30 pm on Thursday, 23rd January 2014.
This convention was an endeavour to redefine
West-centric modernity from an Indian perspective.
This is a vital need of the hour as current Indian
understanding of modernity is limited to what we
borrow from the west in the form of language,
modern culture and attire, sprinkled with some
undefined notions of equality. In short, this
western notion of modernity celebrates the
physicality of womanhood, while undermining her
inherent spiritual form. This convention is a
laudable attempt to redefine the Indian woman and
what she stands for, hence the theme, " Indian
Women as the Guide for the World at Crossroads."
This programme featured eminent Indian women
who are revolutionary thinkers and activists in
their chosen fields. Dr. V Shanta, Chairperson of the
Adyar Cancer Research Institute, Dr. Padma
Subrahmanyam, noted danseuse and President,
Nrithyodaya and Mrs. Rajashree Birla from the
Aditya Birla Group. Presentations on "Spiritual Foundation of Indian
Womanhood," by Dr. Prema Pandurang, Founder,
Ksetropasana Trust and "The Feminine character of
the Indian Economy," by Mr. S Gurumurthy, renowned
Economic Thinker.
Let us pledge to make Swami Vivekananda's timeless
words, "There is no chance for welfare of the
world unless the condition of women is improved,"
a reality.
