Centre for Science and Environment (CSE) - launch of 'Forum of cities that segregate' on
12 December, 2017.
Municipal solid waste (MSW) continues to be a severe problem in
India due to poor management systems. From collection of wastes to
disposal, cities are struggling to implement an affordable and
sustainable model. On top of this, the amount of waste generated is
increasing every day. Urban India alone generates a gigantic 1.5 lakh
metric tonnes per day of MSW. This amount is increasing every year by 5
percent due to increasing population and consumption.
It is well understood that segregation at source is at the heart of the
waste management solution. Segregation improves collection efficiency
and leads to better efficiency in processing of waste. On 5th June,
2017, the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA) introduced a
countrywide campaign to segregate waste at source. But ensuring
segregation at source requires infrastructure for segregation and tough
compliance systems. Municipalities will need to put into place systems
that will transport segregated waste and then ensure processing of the
segregated waste. Municipalities will have to come out with bylaws that
support segregation.
Centre for Science and Environment (CSE) has been working with cities to
promote and implement source-segregation model of waste management. To
advance this work and to create a movement in the country on
source-segregation, CSE is launching the ‘Forum of Cities that
Segregate’ on 12th December, 2017. Under this forum, CSE shall be
working closely with over 25 cities to ensure that these cities adopt
100% source segregation and become the pioneer of waste management in
the country. These cities shall be the focal points for other cities to
learn waste management.
Main objectives of the forum:
Developing a knowledge exchange platform for participating cities on solid waste management (SWM)
Training and capacity building on source-segregation model of SWM
Tracking the progress of cities
Forum cities to become pioneer cities and handhold other cities on technical, economic and social aspects of SWM
Forum shall collate the feedback and inputs from the forum cities and
provide policy-relevant information to the state governments and Centre
on SWM.

Release of publication Body Burden: Lifestyle Diseases - the second in the series of books on the State of India’s Health.
India faces a double burden of diseases. We have the diseases of the
poor - everything from malnutrition to cholera. But we also have the
diseases of the rich - cancer and diabetes. These diseases, called
lifestyle diseases or non-communicable diseases now contribute more to
India’s disease burden than communicable diseases and are responsible
for more than 61 per cent of all deaths in India. They are part of the
package of "toxic" development and are connected to our lifestyles. What
we eat? What air we breathe? And what environment we live in?
Body Burden: Lifestyle Diseases captures the latest research and surveys
and provides an understanding on what needs to be done to reverse the
trend.

The Crow and Other Mysteries - An Exhibition of Paintings by Darshana Bajaj

Inauguration: 19th December, 2017
Venue: Sarala’s Art Centre, 1/12, Ganeshpuram 3rd Street, Chennai 600018
Gallery Timings: 11.00 am - 6.15 pm

Artist’s Biography:
Darshana
Bajaj completed her MA History of Fine Arts from Stella Maris College
in 1996. Since then she has participated in a number of group and solo
shows in the city. She also has a diploma in drawing and painting from
the C.P. R. Art Centre, 2002, and has been fortunate to be briefly
guided by senior artists like A.V. Ilango and Geetha Ananthakrishnan.
This Chennai-based artist works as a language editor by day.
Artist’s Statement:
Art for me is an ongoing dialogue with life. It is an adventure, a
process that reveals the world to me... My journey as an artist has been
a journey of self-discovery as well as of spiritual and emotional
healing. While some of the paintings I do are a response to what I see
around me, most of them come from a place deep within...they are
paintings from the soul.
In The Crow and Other Mysteries (my 6th solo), I present my latest
series of paintings, called “Under a Crimson Sky”, as well as some
earlier works. In Under a Crimson Sky, I have tried to create a
parallel universe... a place where knowing exists along side of
innocence, where love and divine protection surround us, allowing us
peaceful days and restful nights. A place where children once again find
a playground in nature, and people live in harmony, watched and guided
by the eternal spirit depicted here as the ubiquitous crow. The
experiences of life, the traumas of the past, hold fragments of our soul
prisoner...it’s when we gather all these pieces, and put ourselves
right again, sometimes after a long journey...we may find ourselves, as
it were, under a crimson sky.
