Kuppai Thiruvizha in Panagal Park - sharing email from Citizen consumer and civic Action Group (CAG)
Citizen consumer and civic Action Group (CAG) organised Kuppai Thiruvizha,
a space to reflect on our production and consumption habits, and to
celebrate alternatives to creating wasteful discards held in
Panagal Park, T Nagar on Sunday, December 23, 2018, between 9:00 a.m.
and 7:00 p.m. Hosted by Kuppai Matters, a platform of more than 30 civil
society groups and associations advocating for sustainable production,
consumption, and disposal practices to centrestage the ban on single-use plastics.
Since November 2017, the platform has been organising Kuppai Thiruvizhas
across the city as a last-mile effort to gain a common understanding of
the diversity of factors that affect waste management in Chennai and
help the city become compliant with SWM Rules 2016. Currently, the
problem of waste is framed as one of littering and lack of technology to
manage the quantum of waste. However, what we need is to emphasise on
the consumerist and use-and-throw culture that leads to the waste of
valuable materials. The proposed plastic ban in the state is an
opportunity for us to come together and revisit some of these values and
collectively think of a way forward.
These are some of the values that you can experience firsthand at the
Kuppai Thiruvizha, against the backdrop of the plush and giant brands
and businesses that are otherwise the mainstay of T Nagar. There will be
stalls that provide sustainable alternatives to single-use, disposable
plastic products, including cloth bags, shoppers and pouches, bamboo
alternatives to everyday household and personal care plastics,
packaging-free food products, and plastic-free personal hygiene
products, among other things. Workshops on cloth diapering, household
composting, plastic upcycling, and cloth-pad making will be organised
free of cost. There will be kiosks where you can donate your used
electronic items and old (but well maintained) clothes. Children can
experience sharing at the toys and books exchange kiosks, and anyone can
exchange their used clothes for other minimally-used clothes.

About the Topic
Inscriptions stones (Shila Shaasanas) in the Bengaluru area are original
documentation of the people of that region, their culture, religion,
and language. These stones conjure up vivid pictures of the historic and
social fabric of the past, with linguistic plurality, construction of
lakes, tax practices, donations, grants, governance et al making up
their warp and weft. Rampant urbanization in Bengaluru has led to the
destruction of a majority of the 150 stones in the old ‘Bangalore’
region, painstakingly documented by B.L. Rice and others between 1894
and 1905 and captured remarkably in the twelve-volume ‘Epigraphia
Carnatica’ series.
The talk - “Inscription Stones Of Bangalore” (Facebook:
& Twitter: @inscriptionblr) a citizen activism project to raise
awareness and protect ancient inscription stones found in the Bengaluru
region. The project has been using technology (social media, mapping, 3D
scanning, 3D printing, OCR) to protect preserve & restore the
dignity of the last few remaining ‘Inscription Stones Of Bangalore’. One
of its passionately ambitious projects is to build a Mandapa designed
in ‘Ganga’ style to house the oldest known inscription of Bengaluru,
dating back to 750 CE, the “Kittiah Veeragallu” (Kittiah Herostone) of
Hebbal, through crowd-funding from all strata of the society including
the local community, a path-breaking attempt in responsible heritage
activism.
About the Speaker
Udaya is a passionate Bangalorean and an accidental
historian-conservationist. He has a Master’s degree in Engineering
Mechanics from IIT Madras and has earlier worked in various capacities
for the Tatas and General Electric. He currently heads the Software
Delivery Centre, India at Schneider Electric, delivering industrial
automation solutions to clients worldwide.

by IFA since 1995, are being archived. The IFA Archive, launched
yesterday on October 25, 2018, is a work-in-progress. Material from
grants supported in 2011 and 2012 is available on the online archive.

and 2010.

Clay Ganeshas and Gowris at Bimba The Art Ashram
Each one of more than 200 Ganesha and Gowri idols is individually
hand-painted by artist Deepika DORAI . Such brush painting highlights the
delicate details of the garments ornaments and discovers the beauty of
expression - aspects that enhance the Pooja. Bimba has been growing the use of
Organic ( water-soluble, earth-friendly, child-safe colours )
every year over the last 15 years. Clay Ganeshas and Gowris are fashioned by traditional potters
who use fully soluble unbaked river or pond silt. These skilled
craftspersons inherit a sense of proportion and detailing
including various traditional poses such as the Yedamuri or
Balamuri ( left or right oriented trunk) Peetha Ganesha or the Lotus
seated Ganesha or Gowri or the Seyr Gowri.
Other pooja offerings include skilfully handcrafted and vibrantly
handpainted small and large mantaps, peethams (stools), mini thottulus
(swings), colourful vertical and horizontal (festoons) and a wide
range of handmade Vastra (attire) and Aabharana (ornaments).

About the Topic:
The beginning of 20th Century saw a massive transformation in the lives
of women of India and in particular Madras, who were not only getting
exposed to modern education but getting and creating opportunities to
excel in their chosen fields, like literature, arts and science.
Performing arts:
TP Rajalakshmi - the first actress of a South Indian talkie. TA Madhuram
– pioneering comedienne of yester years, who regaled and mesmerized the
talkie-goers
Science:
Madras also boasts of several trailblazing women in the field of
science, Janaki Ammal, who has a species of Magnolia named after
her, Anna Mani, meteorologist of renown, who rose up to the rank
of Deputy Director General of India Meteorological Department. A
Lalitha, India's first woman Engineer and Dr Muthulakshmi Reddy, perhaps
the first woman to study in a men’s college, one of the first lady
doctors of the Madras of British India and most significantly, first
woman legislator of British India.
Literature:
We have an educationally very accomplished Kamala Sathianathan, the
first woman graduate of the Madras Presidency, who became the first
editor of India's first womens' magazine in English and
‘Jaganmohini’ Vai Mu Kothainayagi Ammal, who home-schooled after her
marriage, authoring 115 Tamil novels, also wearing the mantle of first
woman writer of detective novels in Tamil.
Social activism:
Ammu Swaminathan whose condition for marriage was 'shifting to Madras',
one of the signatories to the Constitution of India and Durgabhai
Deshmukh, a little girl who demanded Pandit Nehru buying a ticket to
enter a Khadi exhibition, who established Andhra Mahila Sabha for the
cause of empowerment and education of women.
About the Speaker:
Nivedita Louis, writer and historian, is currently writing a series
“Muthal Pengal” in popular women’s magazine Aval Vikatan. As an
ex-employee of Southern Railways she likes to travel, explore and learn.
She also works as content curator, having recently curated an
exhibition on Musical Instruments “Iyal Isai Museum Exhibition” for
Government Museum, Chennai. She also conducts and curated walks of
Poonamalle, Greenways Road, RK Salai etc., In one of the walks she
stumbled upon fragments of an inscription of Rajendra Chola. She gave a
talk on ‘Gujili literature’ at Madras Literary Society sometimes ago.

After receiving an overwhelming response in Delhi with its last edition
“Mumbai Meri Jaan” last year, ETHICUS showcased its second
collection at the capital. This two-day exhibition was on 9th &
10th March 2018 from 10:30 AM to 7:00 PM at New Delhi’s Aga Khan Hall
and showcased handwoven textiles from Pollachi, Tamil
Nadu.
The Pollachi-based brand Ethicus stands for ‘Ethics and Us’. Ethicus
debuted at the Lakme Fashion week in Mumbai last year in September
wherein they showcased their ‘Matchmaker’ collection which comprised of
14 garments dominated by saris. The show took place on LFW’s Sustainable

Kalarigram is a traditional
Kalaripayattu training center located just off the Tindivanam
established in 2010 by Shri Ramesan Lakshmanan, who hails from a
traditional Kalaripayattu family (Hindustan Kalari Sangam, estd. 1950)
based in Calicut, Kerala, India. This center has been training students
in Kalaripayattu - one of the world’s most ancient martial art forms,
Yoga, Meditation and Ayurveda. The aim of Lakshman Gurukkal is to revive
and restore this ancient art form; and rediscover the wisdom that made
Kalairpayattu the bedrock of the very culture and tradition of Kerala’s
classical dance forms like Kathakali and Mohiniyattam and folk arts like
Koodiyatham, Theyyam and Velakali, to name a few. It also incorporated
very sophisticated treatment systems that were based on the ancient
principles of Ayurveda and Siddha and allowed warriors to recover from
injuries. The philosophy of the practice also included spiritual and
tantric practices.
The Kalarigram Amphitheater intends to provide the required space for
inviting people from all over the world to create awareness of this
ancient philosophy and tradition. It will serve as the core
infrastructure that will underpin all initiatives to popularize
Kalaripayattu by providing the right platform to showcase the
multi-layered complexity and nuances of this art form. Located in close
proximity to the Auroville Township, it will serve as the perfect portal
for performers and artists from all over the world to engage with this
tradition, exchange ideas and philosophy, and serve as a platform for
research and experimentation. Our intention is that this place serves as
a hub that will trigger the revival and rediscovery of Kalaripayattu.

Art Exhibition : Painting India by Caroline Dantheny | Jan 19th - 28th, 11am to 7pm at Lalit Kala Akademi, Chennai
Caroline Dantheny studied art and fashion, launching women’s fashion
collections under her own name, then creating costumes and unique pieces
before devoting herself to painting. Jean-François Lesage grew up among
the gold threads and glass beads of France’s most revered embroidery
workshop.
Built by his father François Lesage, the House of Lesage symbolised the
highest craftsmanship in fashion, providing embroideries to
haute-couture labels like Chanel, Lanvin, Balmain, Givenchy and
Christian Lacroix. In 2011, the painter Caroline Dantheny meets Jean-François Lesage. A
sincere friendship and a work of art, interweaving the liveliness of
abstract painting to the subtlety of embroidery, are born out of this
unexpected collaboration.
The embroidered linens, exhibited at ‘Painting India’ in Chennai at the
Lalit Kala Academy.
