KALAKSHETRA
THE CRAFT EDUCATION AND RESEARCH
CENTRE
Kalamkari Block Printing
Unit
This Unit was created in April 1978
to revive another old craft namely that of printing textiles using hand-carved
wooden blocks and natural dyes. "Kalamkari" literally transalated means
pen-craft(kalam-pen; kari-craft).
Destitute and handicapped women from
the poorer sections of society were taken for training in this craft.
Considerable experimentation
has led to the stabilizing of the vegetable dyes and to the adaptation
of the traditional methods used in Machilipatnam to local conditions. Single
and double bedsheets, table cloths, napkin sets and other household linen
as well as saris, dress materials and lungis were printed in this unit.
