The name is derived from Mi (people), Zo (lofty place, such as a hill)
and Ram (land), and thus Mizoram implies "Land of the hill people".
Mizoram was previously part of Assam until 1972, when it was carved out
as a Union Territory. It became the 23rd state of India on 20 February
1987.

The "Land of Seven Sisters" ia a name to denote the inter-dependency
of the 7 contiguous states of Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Manipur,
Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland and Tripura in northeastern India. The
neighbouring 8th North eastern state Sikkim is called the only brother
of seven sisters states.
