Swarnapureeswarar (Padikaasunaadar Koil) - Azhagaaputhur - Siva Temple
Swarnapureeswarar temple
is located in Azhagaaputhur, 7 kms from Kumbakonam on the way to Tiruvarur.
Pugazhthunai Naayanar, one among
the 63 Naayanmars performed regular pooja & abhishekam to this Lord.
In his old age he found it difficult to fetch water from Arisilaaru (river).
Also he was very poor and struggled for his daily food, but he continued
with his duty.
One day the weak old Naayanmar dropped
the abisheka vessel on the Lingam. He was deeply worried that he
had hurt the Lord and fainted in his grief. The Lord appeared in
his dream & promised to place a gold coin on the sannadhi step every
day to relieve his poverty.
The Naayanmar found a coin as promised
on the step everyday & he used it for the welfare of the people.
Devotees place two coins on the sannadhi
step, leave one coin there & take the other home in the belief that
it was given by the Lord. They keep it in the pooja room & worship
it as the Lord. There is a belief that this will rid their poverty
& bring them riches.
The Amman in this temple is Soundaranaayagi.
She restored the beauty of a princess & hence the name (soundara -
beauty). Devotees pray to the Goddess seeking a good married life
and children.
Lord Muruga gives darshan in this
temple with 6 faces, 18 hands seated on his peacock along with Valli &
Deivayaanai. In two of his hands are the weapons held by his uncle, Lord
Vishnu - Changu & Chakram (conch & discuss)
The temple faces west.
