Listen to artist Jay Varma speak on 'how its never to late to learn'. For a man whose great great great grandfather is none other than Raja Ravi Varma, he knew he wasn’t exploring his potential to the fullest. Nearly 20 years after he made up his mind to study art Jay Varma is possibly one of the few Indian artists who practices portraiture in a manner and style similar to his illustrious ancestor. He is also Founder Trustee of the Raja Ravi Varma Heritage Foundation and the recipient of the largest grant given out by Sandeep & Gitanjali Maini Foundation, for education. Jay Varma discloses in this podcast, “Once, during class, I was immobilised by the fear of failure. I think one of my instructors saw it and came up to me and said, “You know more than you think you know.” Moments like these encouraged me not to lose heart and keep going on.”

A Digital Lecture - Culturescaping by Professor Swaminathan
presented by Tamil Heritage Trust
4th April 2020, Saturday 5:30 PM.
Youtube link will be shared via Email, Facebook, WhatsApp and THT Website on the day of the digital lecture

About the Topic
Landscaping modifies the visible features of an area of land to make it appealing. Culturescaping, in addition, attempts to sensitise public towards our heritage, a bio-aesthetic, spiritual, religious, ecological approach to landscaping. This is but feeling our culture in every step. Covering space to uncover our past, Turning idle minutes into enchanting moments, Let us have yesterday, Ode to our multi-faceted culture, Rhythm, harmony and balance, … and peace, are some  interesting themes.

Culturescaping as Sanga-ch-cholai is an attempt to celebrate our 2000-year old heritage where nature around the people provided substance for literary metaphor. agath-th-thottam and purath-th-thottam celebrate the literary expressions synergising both nature and literature inspired by it, for a visual, emotional and literary treat two millenia later! Similarly yappu-th-thoppu would be an orchard consisting mango (sweet and sour), vila and vilva trees, for these trees form the basis for the mimetic mnemonics in Tamil prosody. Lastly, a flower garden with the 99 plants mentioned in the kurinji-p-pattu by kapilar.

About the Speaker
Professor Swaminathan had a thriving career as a faculty member in IIT Delhi, a premier engineering institution in India.  He sought voluntary retirement, first to work in the Integrated Rural Technology Centre in Kerala and then moved full time into Culture and Heritage. He first established Sudarsanam in Pudukkottai to document the heritage of Pudukkottai, his hometown.  Subsequently, he was instrumental in establishing the Tamil Heritage Trust in Chennai and remains it founder chairman.

Tamil Heritage Trust - Monthly Talk # 129 - " Trees in our Temples, Lore and Literature"
A Talk in Tamil by Rajani Arjun Shankar
February 1, 2020 Saturday 5.30pm at  Arkay Convention Centre, Mylapore
146/3 R.H.Road, OMS Lakshana (Above Shah Electronics), Mylapore, Chennai

Trees are important parts of our physical world, providing clean air, food, medicine, timber, and a myriad of other things. But our connection with trees goes much deeper. We worship them in temples. We describe them in our tales, proverbs, and poetry. In this talk, we look at these connections, by taking up about a dozen different species of trees, and seeing how they feature in rituals, Tamil language, and literature.

Rajani Arjun Shankar taught English, Social Studies, Sanskrit, etc. in "The School - KFI". She is deeply interested in Carnatic Music as well as Sanskrit and Tamil literature. She has compered thematic concerts and translated works from Sanskrit to English. She volunteers with Nizhal, an NGO that works towards sensitive greening of urban spaces, and often leads Tree Walks in different localities of Chennai for adults and school children.

11 th year Hindu Spritual &Services fair held from 29 th Jan 2020  till 3rd Feb 2020 with about 300 stalls of various  charitable activities
As in previous ten years, Lighting of Shivaalayas Kuzhu participated in this holy event
At GuruNanak College Velacherry, Chennai  600042

Dear Devotees, welcome to our mission to light our Siva temples with oil lamps. Lighting traditional oil lamps with a cotton wick in a brass or a silver or an earthen lamp has been part our religious tradition since time immemorial. Lord Siva has also been worshipped in the form of Agni at Thiruvannamalai shrine and its association with Karthigai deepam festival is well known.
Lighting temples with vilakku (lamp) is an adorable need extolled by saints in our dharma - more so the Nayanmars.  We are working in temples - mostly ancient ones located in rural areas around Kumbakonam. This is an easy yet effective way to reinvirogate the worship in our hoary temples located in the far flung villages.
Please do your bid to fill in the oil to light a lamp in the age old temples at your native villages or join us to light the temples where immediate attention is needed.
We intend to provide temples with oil tins of Gingelly oil - Nallennai or of mahua oil - Illupennai. Illuppai or Mahua as it is known in North India (botanical name: Bassia longifolia) is a suitable choice for oil in temple. Unfortunately the tree is getting harder to find in Tamilnadu and this famous tree - a sthalavruksham needs to be promoted in a big way.
Illupai can also be planted wherever possible and that will serve as a source of oil and also be of ecological & aesthetic value and help combat global warming. We can also assist you in raising these plantations.
We are involved in renovation of a few temples in Tamilnadu and have completed a few in the recent past. You can find the details at sites.google.com/...
